<image:title>Home - Our Community</image:title>
<image:caption>We sometimes joke around when we say that we live in a place where most people vacation, but there’s truth to it. The Napa Valley is such a unique and beautiful place. We feel that the community of the Napa Valley is one of the contributing factors of why it’s so special. It’s a community of farmers, chefs, winemakers, artists, and crafts people to name just a few. Over the last decade the Napa Valley community has been put to the test with multiple wildfires, earth quakes, and a pandemic, and have come out of it stronger than ever. Being there for your neighbor is something that we at MJ really believe in!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Bridging the Gap</image:title>
<image:caption>Josh & Mary created MJ Heritage Farms to be able to bridge the gap between Chefs & Farmers. Often farmers are able to raise or grow something amazing but don’t know how or what to make with it, or to be able to utilize everything. On the flip side, Chefs know how to make something absolutely delicious and utilize every part but have no clue how to raise or grow the things they are cooking. At MJ we are both chefs and farmers and have intension with everything that we do on the farm, from raising our animals with the utmost care and humane practices to wasting nothing so that we honor the relationship between farm animal and the farmer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - About MJ Heritage</image:title>
<image:caption>We are a husband and wife team with an extensive background in fine dining. Working for Michelin level chefs has given us perspective on how chefs at such a high level source ingredients for their cuisine. It all starts with delicious and fresh ingredients. In our experience we’ve learned that delicious equals nutrient dense which means starting with the soil. The soil is a living & evolving thing, and the more life that is contained within, the more layers and complexity of flavors that come from things grown on that soil.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Farm - Ameraucana Hen</image:title>
<image:caption>is an American breed of domestic chicken. It was developed in the United States in the 1970s, and derives from Araucana chickens brought from Chile. It was bred to retain the blue-egg gene but eliminate the lethal alleles of the parent breed. It shows many similarities to the Araucana, including the pea comb and the blue egg gene. It is tailed, muffed and bearded, which make it more hardy and able to withstand colder weather.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Farm - Great Pyrenees</image:title>
<image:caption>In the seventeenth century, Madame de Maintenon and Louis, Dauphin of France, brought a dog of this type to the court of King Louis XIV, where they soon became in great demand, the King even naming it the Royal Dog of France. They came to be used by the French nobility to guard their chateaux, particularly in the south of the country. Pyrs were bred to work with shepherds and herding dogs in the Pyrenees Mountains, the natural border between France and Spain. The Pyr's job was to watch the flock and deter predators, whether wolves, bears, or livestock rustlers. Their courage when defending the flock is legendary.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Farm - Jersey Cows</image:title>
<image:caption>This breed originated on the Island of Jersey over 200 years ago. Jersey is the southern-most island in the English Channel, off the coast of France. The Jersey breed is one of the oldest dairy breeds with reports from as early as 1771 stating that these cattle were a chief product of the Island. Jersey’s are world renowned for the quality of their milk, which contains higher concentrations of proteins, solids, butterfat, and beta-carotene than milk from other breeds. Best for making ice cream, butter & cheese.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Farm - Farming Practices</image:title>
<image:caption>We offer our animals an intensive rotational grazing, with abundant bio diversity which mimics mother nature & utilizes the natural behavior of the animal to keep the health of the land in balance. We are running different animals through our pastures at different times so they contribute fertilizer and help manage the grasses according to the species and what they are naturally drawn to. Our hogs and chickens especially draw up the natural seed bank with rooting and scratching which allows for more native grass species to shine through. Our goal is to use the different animals to stimulate the regeneration of the natural grasses and cover crops, all the while leaving root systems in tact to mitigate against erosion and help sequester more water retention.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Farm - Berkshire Pigs</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the oldest identifiable breeds of pig, the Berkshire hog was introduced to the United States in the early 1800s. The Berkshire breed offered an improvement to the general hog population when crossed with that stock. The fear that the breed would be completely diluted led breeders to start the American Berkshire Association in 1875, the first swine group and registry in the world. The founding of the ABA was met with enthusiasm by the breeders in the U.S. and in England, and it was agreed that only hogs from English herds or hogs that could be traced back to them would be registered. The first boar to be recorded in the registry was Ace of Spades, bred by Queen Victoria herself. Today, many of our Berkshire breed pigs are descended from these original registered animals. Considered a lard hog, due to the ability of being able to add fat from natural forage. Berkshire pork is succulent with a distinctive porky flavor. The meat from Berkshire hogs is redder than conventional pork, somewhat sweeter, and laced with intramuscular fat, which makes it more tender and juicy. Bacon, ham, and sausage from the Berkshires pig is next level.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - Josh</image:title>
<image:caption>Josh grew up in Napa but spent a lot of time on his grandparents pistachio farm in Mendocino & cooking in the kitchen with his Grandma Rosie. This is where his love of food and feeding people came from. Josh often jokes that he has a little Japanese grandma inside of him that just constantly wants to feed and nurture people. Josh made his way in the Napa Valley working in different high end restaurants & kitchens before opening up his own culinary event company & retail sandwich shop. Rising in the ranks in the different kitchens, Josh has always been a big believer in regenerative farming. It took some patience in finding land where he could raise a herd of pigs that would later become the foundation of our breeding stock. Selecting breeding stock with a chef in mind, he selected specific animals that had traits like haunched shoulders, elongated torso, and pronounced hams, which are components of producing high quality meat. Also selecting because of temperament and growth pattern.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - Mary</image:title>
<image:caption>Mary came on to the scene about 10 years into the farm’s story. Mary met Josh at the winery she was interning at in Calistoga. Love at first sight. Mary had worked in the food industry for her entire working life and went to culinary school for baking then got a minor as a Sommelier and quickly fell in love with wine (as you do). She moved to Napa for a 3 month internship but quickly knew this was the place she wanted to stay. After meeting Josh and seeing his passion for animal husbandry it inspired her. She had always loved animals and was very eager to learn the farming industry, thankfully Josh is a great teacher.</image:caption>
